The Place

Summertime is in full effect and it's time to introduce you to my newest category...Destination Brunch. Last week, I was in Destin Florida with my family. With Destin being a popular vacation spot for Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky I figured I would cease the opportunity to do a review of a local brunch restaurant directly on the beach! Whale's Tail is a Destin staple serving, breakfast, lunch, and dinner to locals and tourists for nearly 40 years.

Location

Whale's Tail is located on Destin's Scenic Gulf Drive on the beach at Seascape Resort. Depending on where you are staying this could be very walkable, if not there is on street parking located on Scenic Gulf Drive. Tip, get there early than later because beach parking fills up quickly

The Atmosphere

The atmosphere here is quintessential casual beach dining. They offer deck dining with

spectacular views of white sand and turquoise waters as well as indoor dining. We arrived at

around 9AM this morning with a group of eight and we were seated right on the deck. Both hostess and waitstaff were outgoing and friendly. As far as brunch cocktails go they offer

the basics which are Bloody Mary or mimosa. I opted for the mimosa, and was pleasantly surprised. This was the largest mimosa, I have ever been served which is perfect for the beach. You will notice the picture looks like a draft beer, but oh no it's a giant big gulp mimosa! It would also be easy to assume that a mimosa this large would be diluted but to the contrary this mimosa was made with plenty of bubbles and just the right amount of orange juice. Another bonus is they have the most efficient line cooks I have ever encountered because breakfast for eight people was delivered to the table within five minutes of us placing our order.

Order-Up

Crab Meat Omelet

Being inspired by the beach, I decided to go for the Crab Meat Omelet. This three egg omelet was made with fresh crab, with a Cajun flare, cheddar and jack cheese, and an in-house remoulade sauce. This was delicious! The omelet was cooked perfectly, all of the ingredients were tender and flavorful. Topping it with the remoulade sauce truly took it to the next level. I ordered it with a side of whole wheat toast and breakfast potatoes. As you know, I love a good breakfast potato side. I did feel like the potatoes where a little bland and could have been a little crispier.

Breakfast Sandwich

My niece ordered the Breakfast Sandwich which consisted of fried egg, bacon, and American cheese on white toast. You also have the option of ordering it with sausage or ham and wheat instead of white toast. She described the sandwich as being really good and having nice flavor. We were both in agreeance about the breakfast potatoes.

Overall Experience

Overall experience was great! Staff was friendly, they easily accommodated a large party, and they offered quick service. Main Courses were good, one downside was the blandness of the breakfast potatoes. Prepare to spend $10 to $20 per person.

Rating 3.5 ⭐

Whale's Tail receives 3.5 stars. One star for Atmosphere, Service, and Breakfast Cocktail. They receive half a star for plate due to consistent blandness of breakfast potatoes. This place was a great spot to come for vacay and would especially recommend for anyone traveling with a large group and even a family with small children.
