The Place
This week for Cov Brunch, I am reviewing a quaint urban brunch spot that could easily be missed if you weren't looking for it. The place is called Pike Street. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Pike Street was opened by the same restauranters as Cedar and Yuca, which are two of my favorite spots!
Location & Parking
I am about to get real cryptic here....Pike Street is located on Pike Street in Covington. You can easily get there off the Pike Street Exit off of 75/71 or Madison Ave. Parking is meter and I took full advantage of the Sunday free meter parking. You will definitely want to use your GPS when locating this spot because it is tucked away in a small storefront cubby hole and you may walk/drive right past it. No reservation needed/required, which is nice when you are on the go just looking for a place to grab a quick bite to eat. Sidenote, there was a Bengal's game on this particular morning and this appeared to be a popular pregame spot. I was glad I arrived early.
Atmosphere
Mid-century modern is the phrase I would use to describe the style of this spot. When you walk in there is a diner-style counter to the right with seating and a view of the restaurant's cooktop. Booth style seating is to your left and a back dining area with tables and chairs are available as well. Servers were friendly and attentive. My favorite part of brunch review morning is selection of the AM cocktail and I chose the Morning Martini. This drink was made of vanilla vodka, coffee liqueur, creme de cacao, half & half, whipped cream, and nutmeg. This was drink was a creamy spiced dream and the perfect compliment to a great kick-off holiday weekend.
Order-Up
Stakes Race
For my main, I ordered the Stakes Race. I was tempted by this dish because of all the stated breakfast elements depicted within the menu description. What was presented to me at the table was a glorious stack comprised of a hash brown waffle, chicken fried steak, an over easy egg, garnished with green onion and a Havarti cheese sauce (also know as mornay). This dish was delicious the texture of the hashbrown waffle and chicken fried steak were on point and the egg was cooked perfectly. The flavor of the chicken fried steak was a little bland. I wish there was a little more seasoning incorporated into that portion of the meal.
Overall Experience
The overall experience was great. This is a nice spot to cozy up to on a Sunday morning. The service was friendly and my food and drink were served in a timely manner. I loved the originality of my main course and the spiced smoothness of my AM cocktail.
Rating: 3.5⭐
Pike Street gets 3.5 stars. One star for Atmosphere, Service, and AM Cocktail. They get half a star for Plate due to the blandness of the country fried steak. With that being said, I would
love to come by again to sample another brunch item like the Derby Brown or the Sunrise Sliders.
