The Place
Hello and my apologies for the gap in posts! There has been plenty of holiday distractions i.e.; cookie baking, the creation of my first grazing table, and hosting Christmas Eve. With that being said, I am determined to get this post to you in 2024. I am finalizing my Cov. brunch category with this last spot, Libby's Southern Comfort.
Location & Parking
Libby's is located on W. 8th Street in Covington, located close to Madison Avenue and plenty of other great places to dine and hang out. There is a lot to the side of the restaurant. Pay attention to the signage in the parking lot. They share a building with other businesses and there are spots allotted for each one. On the weekends you can utilize most of the spots. If not, there is on-street meter parking as well as a pay lot directly across from the restaurant. I would recommend reservations because this place fills up quickly and space is limited.
Atmosphere
I would describe the atmosphere as cozy and industrial. Lots of exposed brick, metal lighting fixtures, and concrete flooring. The staff was very cheerful and attentive. Plenty of windows and daylight. The morning my stepmom and I arrived it was cold and rainy. It definitely felt good being in a place like this with a nice AM cocktail to warm you up. Speaking of which, my stepmom had the Tipsy Rudolph Spritz which consisted of vodka, cranberry juice, rosemary infused simple syrup, and prosecco. I mean what's not to love and a great choice for a holiday drink. I went with the more traditional Libby's Cheerwine Bourbon Slush. This was another lovely choice with great flavor and it was not too overpowering. Sidenote, there was a little delay for my drink to make it's way to the table because we arrived at open and they had to wait for it to get slushy. Totally understanding of this by the way.
Order-Up
Goetta Hushpuppies
It's not everyday that we get an appetizer for brunch, so went for the Goetta Hushpuppies. These was a great fusion! Nice crisp breading on the outside, cooked to perfect goetta on the inside. The remoulade was a match made in heaven.
Kentucky Breakfast Brown
I ordered the Kentucky Breakfast Brown. This dish delivered. Out to the table came a cast iron skillet with home fries, goetta, bacon, scrambled egg, tomato, cheddar cheese, and sausage gravy. This was a creative breakfast spin on a Louisville classic. I would actually recommend splitting this dish because it was gigantic. I ended up taking half of it home. All elements of the dish had their own individual flavor. I particularly enjoyed the sharpness of the cheddar cheese.
Chicken and Waffle
My stepmom ordered the Chicken & Waffle. The Belgian waffle was large and golden. Atop the waffle was a perfectly seasoned fried chicken thigh and leg. This dish came with a side of dreamy bourbon, candied pecan butter, maple syrup, and South Carolina vinegar and pepper BBQ sauce. It was great combining all of these great flavors. FYI, this was another large dish!
Overall Experience
The overall experience was wonderful! Another great place for a holiday brunch. The food did not disappoint and you really get your money's worth with the portion size. Expect to spend twenty to thirty dollars here if you plan on having an AM cocktail. Only minor criticism is the wrong dish was delivered to my stepmom. This was instantly corrected and they were very apologetic and we were offered a free dessert. I appreciate accountability. This did cause a small delay in her food coming to the table.
Rating: 3.5⭐
Libby's Southern Comfort gets 3.5 stars. One star for Atmosphere, AM Cocktail, and Plate. They received half a star for Service due to the main dish mix-up. Honestly, they were so gracious about their mistake. I almost feel bad not giving them the other half. There is lots of greatness here and will definitely be back for me classic southern dishes.
