Flops & Flexibility in Restaurant Blogging

Writer's picture: The Sunrise EpicureThe Sunrise Epicure

This week, I am taking a break from reviews to talk about some epic flops, transitions, and flexibility as a restaurant blogger. When I first created this blog, I figured hey I will make a list of places I want to visit, show up once there open, order breakfast/brunch, gather content for my posts, and be on my merry way! Seems simple right? Well I have learned most of the time this works but have definitely encountered some frustrations here and there. This is where I have had to learn the art of adaptability.

Findlay Flops & Redemptions

The first category I did was Findlay Fare based on my brunch excursions in Findlay Market. When I selected this as my first category I thought I couldn't go wrong because the whole area is based around great food. My first flop was my attempt to visit the Dunlap Cafe, which is just a couple blocks from Findlay. It has been in OTR since 1936 and was looking forward to ordering a mett, cheese, and egg breakfast sandwich with a side of hashbrown balls. We arrived at open with a front door that was locked and you could hear people talking on the inside. Let's just say our knocks were ignored. I have to admit I felt dissed! We ended up heading over to The Anchor Grill where I gathered content for my next blog, Diner Dash. My second flop was the OTR Bagel Bar debacle. This is where I had to make two separate trips just get descent or any content on the place. One great thing that came out of this trip was the discovery of breakfast at The Arepa Place, which was a nice surprise. From this moment on I realized the power of additional options and back up plans.

OTR Ins and Outs

There are so many fabulous places to dine around the OTR Vine Street district. However, it may come a surprise to you that most of these places don't serve brunch. While I love Taste of Belgium, I did not want to include it in this category because it would be an option that was cliche'. I was happy to find a spot called Soul Secrets. My friend and I arrived shortly after it opened to sheer disappointment. The cook decided they weren't making brunch that day, interesting right? All I can say is my attempt at content was saved by the chicken and waffle.

Walnut Wonders

This past Saturday, I ventured over to Walnut Hills to visit a coffee shop called King Pigeon that offered a small breakfast menu. I ordered my mocha and when I asked if they had a breakfast menu the barista stated they weren't serving breakfast that day. Did the cook call in or was the barista the cook and hungover? I figured a post on a cup of coffee would be pretty lame, so I headed to another coffee shop with breakfast options and decided I would right a blog about flexibility and flops instead. On the way home, I did find another spot I will hopefully be blogging about in a couple of weeks!

The Moral of the Story

Always have your eye open for great places. As restaurants close, new ones open. This means I am constantly augmenting and updating my lists and categories. As a blogger it is always nice if you have a back log of content, to stay ahead of the game. Ideally, I would love to sit down with a friend or family member, have a cocktail delivered to the table and a hot plate served in front of me. However, I have learned walk-in, order at the counter, grab and go places can be great on the fly or when you are in a bind! I hope you have enjoyed! ❤️Sunrise Epicure.
