Drinking in the AM may be taboo for some, with that being said the brunch cocktail is a great distraction when you are waiting for your main to arrive to the table. I love the classics as well as the unconventional. This week we take a trip down memory lane to review and reminisce about both.
Mimosa
I mean, who does not love the Mimosa? This AM cocktail classic brings back memories of bridal showers, vacation, and of course brunch with besties. Definitely something many women bond over but men enjoy as well, even if though they may not admit it! Whether it's the classic orange juice with champagne or a a juice substitution of pineapple or cranberry there are so many ways to enjoy! My favorite mimosa on my brunch journey has definitely been the Margarita Mimosa at Yucca. What can go wrong when you take a classic AM drink and mix it with one of the greatest PM drinks...nothing! This was pure summer refreshment and wonderment!
Bloody Mary
Next up the Bloody Mary. This is the ultimate cure for the hangover. A little vodka to treat your headache (hopefully Tito's) and tomato juice to restore vitamin depletion. What more could you ask for on a Sat. or Sun. morning? How can I go on without mentioning a Bloody Mary bar? If you are ever delegated the task of bringing something to a brunch this is a crowd pleaser. I first fell in love with this AM cocktail when a co-worker showed me a pic of a Bloody Mary they had on the rooftop deck at The Phelps in downtown Cincy. There it was, a classic bloody with a skewer of three mini cheeseburgers exploding out of it! I have yet to seek this out. You best believe I will find it one day. So my best Bloody Mary rec thus far is at one of my fav's in Covington, Cedar. Warning this beverage contains heat! I present to you The Devil's Punch Bowl. Per the Cedar menu, this bloody consisted of vodka, habanero, citrus, spicy candied bacon, and a hot pickle that is made in house. This is an amped up version of the AM classic that is visually stunning as well.
Espresso Martini
One thing I love about this blog, is that it has forced me to expand my horizons. I often time will choose menu items that don't suit my mood but instead ensure my content is diversified. Sometimes it ends up well and sometimes it does not. If you have been a loyal follower than you know one of my best discoveries is the Espresso Martini. I must say that cold brew coffee is not my jam during the Monday-Friday work week grind. However, in a martini at brunch...now I can go with that! My best Espresso Martini experience was at Coppin's in the Hotel Covington. Not only was this cocktail luxurious and gorgeous but smooth and refreshing. This Espresso Martini consisted of the following: vodka, bourbon cream, nitro cold brew, and demerara.
Best Unconventional: Pain Killer:
Okay so this is not a AM cocktail per say. Usually my favorite unconventionals are when I stumble across a place that offers their entire cocktail list all day long. My first and best experience with the Pain Killer was at OTR's Sacred Beast Diner. This and Cedar are in my top two favorites brunch spots. This is probably considered a key vacay drink for most. Forget the vaction for now because all I need is this, an outdoor patio, some good old fashioned OTR people watching, and this drink! This AM cocktail consists of Captain Morgan Rum, Coco Lopez, pineapple, lime, and orange juice. It's a little bit of Caribbean right in the heart of Cincy.
Just to Sum it Up
AM breakfast cocktail classics are always great to rely on. At times they may be your only option. I highly recommend expanding your horizons and challenging yourself to select an item off the beaten path every once in a while. Open your mind and pleasant surprises will await and awaken your palate! ❤️The Sunrise Epicure
