The Place
This month I am changing up the pace and am going to be visiting traditional diner spots in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. There are no reservations needed and sitting at the counter is the exception to the rule this time around. First stop is a diner that has been in business for over 75 years, The Anchor Grill in Covington.
Parking
This is a Sunrise Epicure first....a restaurant that actually has it's own parking lot, that is free for customers! The Anchor Grill is located on West Pike Street in Covington, right off of the Brent Spence Bridge.

You will notice upon entrance via the signage posted on the door, this restaurant accepts cash only. If you forget, there is an ATM located right in the entrance next to the juke box. The Anchor Grill has three main dining areas. When you first walk in there is true counter-style diner seating surrounding a cooktop where you can see your meal being freshly prepared. The next room over is a dimly-lit, with booths, and nautical artwork. The third dining area is painted sky blue with oak furniture. You will also notice vintage kitschy, collectibles throughout the diner contributing to the authenticity and originality of this place. You feel like you are taking a dinner cruise on a tugboat! I mean this in the most endearing way because of the décor and being so close to the Ohio River. No breakfast cocktails here so I opted for a fresh cup of coffee. This spot definitely has a friendly family-owned feel and you can imagine they have their fare share of regulars.
Order-Up
I ordered the half order of biscuits and gravy which is a rare treat for me and a side of shredded hashbrowns. This meal was both comforting and heavenly, reminding me of
something my mother would have made for Sunday breakfast growing up.
My brunch buddy ordered french toast, eggs over easy, and a side of goetta. The portions were generous and the food came out hot, fresh, and were not dredged in grease.
Overall Experience
The overall experience at The Anchor Grill was great. The servers were personable and happy. Service was prompt. The selected menu items were classic diner dishes that left you more than fulfilled. You can expect to eat a full brunch for ten to twenty dollars.
Recommend: Yes or No?
Yes! This is a great place to visit early in the morning while you are out running errands and just want to make a quick brunch detour. The parking lot is wonderful making it easy to get in and out. The décor and vibe of the restaurant is enough reason to stop by and dine-in! Would also love to stop in for a late meal one night.
